UHT Founder & Dean
Dr. James R Grant, Ph.D., D.Min.
July 22, 1939 - February 8, 2019
dr. jim grant - UHT

UHT Founder, Dr. Jim Grant’s, life may read like the script of a dramatic Hollywood film, but his path has led him full-circle – from his early metaphysical roots to his current work as a worldwide educator.

Following a devastating auto accident that nearly took his life as a teenager, a young Jim Grant began a life-long journey of Metaphysical and Psychological study. Today, more than a half-century later, he recalls the accident and his subsequent recovery as a major turning point in his life. Jim experienced what was to be his first of two near-death-experiences that would dramatically change his perception of life - and guide him toward his work today as an international educator in the Metaphysical and Holistic fields.

After a long and painful rehabilitation from the accident that nearly took his life, Jim had recovered far beyond his doctor’s expectations. In fact, he was soon strong enough to join the U.S. Navy, where he remained until 1964. As a civilian, Jim brought his hard work, enthusiasm and determination to the business world – and in the period after leaving the military through the mid 1970s, he had achieved top-honors and national recognition in his field.

In 1974, Jim began his studies as a psychology major with California State University – he was drawn to the study of what made the human mind tick – and he thrived in this environment. He soon became president of the Psychology club, a peer counselor and the first manager of the CSU peer counseling center. After earning his degree from California State University, he was invited to attend the Harbor Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis where he received his certificate of hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy was an exciting new direction that led Jim further in his study of the human mind – and also led to his joining with two psychologists in their practice, allowing him to further his experience and research.

It was around this time that Jim also rekindled his passion for flying airplanes - accepting a coveted position with the legendary Condor Squadron, a search and rescue unit of the Civil Air Patrol that also performed as a World War II Air Reenactment Squadron. Jim flew the famous AT6, also known as the trainer for the P51 Mustang.

Soon after Jim entered the CSU Masters School of Psychology, an unexpected event led to his taking over the full-time care of his (then 8-year-old) daughter. This was a challenging (but also wonderful) time for Jim – and he made the difficult decision to put his Masters studies on hold for a time. Jim soon returned to his academic work, eventually earning a PhD in philosophy, a Fellowship in Life-Coaching, as well as a second Masters and Doctoral Degree in Metaphysics (D.Min.). Dr. Grant's active work in the field continued until his retirement.

Dr. Grant “officially” retired in 1995 - however, spending all his time in contemplation was not for Dr. Jim – and in 2000 he began discussions with the State of Washington Higher Education Coordinating Board concerning his desire to open a new college devoted to Metaphysical Study. It took 2-years to complete the development process and In 2002 the State of Washington Board of Higher Ed. granted International College of Metaphysical Theology its Religious-Exptemption to award degrees. Under his leadership, ICMT became a worldwide leader in distance-learning metaphysical education, welcoming students from all over the globe.

With the 2009 founding of the University of Holistic Theology (UHT) in Florida, USA, Dr. Grant was able to expand with a program of study that was better focused toward helping students earn degree credentials in the important holistic health and wellness field.

Until his passing in 2019, Dr. Grant was UHT's Dean of Students, and a favorite course professor for several UHT degree program modules.

After 12-years, we are proud to honor Dr. Grant's original vision for UHT as we expand our programs in exciting new directions - both now and in the years to come!
